Do I Actually Need a Hair Transplant? How Surgeons Decide

Not everyone losing hair needs surgery. Here is what a surgical team actually looks at, and the non-surgical treatments that suit diffuse thinning, early recession and women's hair loss.

Plenty of people researching hair transplants don't need one. That sounds like an odd thing for a hair clinic to say, which is exactly why it is worth saying.

A transplant is the right answer to a specific problem. For other patterns of hair loss there are treatments that work better, cost less and involve no surgery at all. Here is how the decision actually gets made.

What the surgical team looks at

Two things decide whether a transplant would work for you.

The first is your hair loss pattern. Surgery suits loss that has settled into a stable pattern, because the surgeon is rebuilding defined areas: the hairline, the crown, the density between them.

The second is your donor hair, the hair at the back and sides of your head. Those follicles are genetically resistant to the hormone behind pattern baldness, and a transplant works by moving them. There has to be enough donor density to build the result without thinning the area it comes from.

When surgery is the answer

If your pattern is stable and your donor hair is strong, an FUE transplant rebuilds what you've lost in a single surgical day: follicles moved one by one, growing naturally and permanently in their new position. The full timeline and what the day involves are set out openly on our hair page.

When it isn't

For diffuse thinning, early recession and the pattern of loss common in women, surgery is often the wrong tool, and two non-surgical treatments carry the evidence instead.

PRP therapy uses your own platelets to encourage the hair you still have. Photodiode therapy treats thinning with light, over a course of sessions. Both are painless, with no downtime, and both are particularly effective for diffuse thinning, which is precisely the pattern where a transplant struggles.

How to find out which you are

A consultation, and it costs nothing: around thirty minutes on video, any evening from 6pm, with the team that would treat you. They assess your pattern and your donor density, answer every question, and tell you honestly which path fits, including the path of doing nothing yet.

That honesty is the point of the whole exercise. Surgery you don't need never looks as good as the right treatment for what is actually happening on your head. Book the free consultation and hear it straight.
