The strangest part of a hair transplant is that three weeks after surgery, your new hair falls out. Nobody puts that in the adverts, so it surprises people every year.
It is also expected, temporary, and part of how the procedure works. Here is the honest timeline of the twelve months after an FUE transplant, so you know exactly what to expect at each stage.
The day itself
An FUE procedure takes six to eight hours under local anaesthesia. Follicles are taken one by one from the back and sides of your head and placed individually to build a natural hairline and density.
The back and sides matter, and here is why: hair there is genetically resistant to the hormone that causes pattern baldness. The follicles carry that resistance with them when they move, which is what makes the result permanent.
The anaesthetic injections at the start sting briefly. Patients consistently call that the most uncomfortable part of the whole day. After that, most people spend the hours watching films or chatting with the team.
The first week
Most patients are back at work within five to seven days. You leave the clinic with a complete aftercare kit and the team's phone number, so any question in that first week gets a real answer instead of a guess.
Weeks two to four: the shedding
This is the stage that alarms people who weren't warned. The transplanted hairs shed. This is expected and normal: the follicle stays exactly where the surgeon placed it, while the old hair strand makes way for a new growth cycle. PRP therapy is included with the procedure to accelerate healing through this phase.
If you know the shedding is coming, it is a milestone. If you don't, it feels like the procedure failed. It didn't.
Months four to six: the new growth
New growth becomes visible around month four, and it arrives gradually rather than overnight. By six months, most patients see 50 to 60 per cent of the final result, which is usually the point where other people start noticing without knowing why you look better.
Month twelve: the finished result
The full outcome shows at twelve months, documented at a complimentary review. Because the follicles keep their genetic resistance, the result is permanent: this is your own hair, growing naturally, for the rest of your life.
