There's a particular evening most people reach in this search: six tabs open, four quotes on the screen, and not one of them agreeing with another. If that's roughly where you are tonight, the whole thing clears up faster than you'd think, because those four numbers are all measuring different things.
Choosing a hair transplant clinic from Manchester
The quotes are where to begin, because that's where all the confusion is coming from.
Most of the numbers you've been given are rates. A rate is a price for one graft, and what you pay is that rate times the number of grafts your own head needs. And nobody counts those until you're already attached to the idea. So two clinics that look a thousand pounds apart on screen can finish much closer together, or much further apart, once the counting happens. Any price that opens with the word "from" is the first number in a sum you haven't seen yet.
Then there are the pieces kept outside the quote altogether: the consultation fee, the PRP, the aftercare kit, the follow-up appointments. Nobody hides those. They just get priced on the day, and by then you've got nothing left to compare them against.
So there's one question to put to every clinic on your list, and it takes a single line in an email: is this the number that goes on the invoice, or the number before the counting starts? The process, from your sofa to the surgical day
Now, what it actually looks like from Manchester, in order.
It begins on video, in the evening, and both of those are deliberate: nobody should have to book a day off work to ask a question. The consultation is free, runs around thirty minutes, and happens any evening from 6pm, with the team that would treat you. No sales script. Why the surgery happens in Leeds, and why an hour is fine
You deserve the straight reason for that, so here it is.
An FUE transplant is a full surgical day: a room set up for surgery, a team working in it for six to eight hours, follicles taken out one at a time and kept alive in solution between the taking and the placing. A single session moves 3,500 to 4,000 grafts, roughly 7,700 individual hairs, and every one of them is placed at an angle judged to match the way your hair grows already. That's a room, a rota and a great deal of equipment, and none of it fits in a case somebody could carry to whichever city you happen to live in.
So we keep one surgical site and we run it properly. It's registered with the Care Quality Commission, which is the body that inspects clinics in England, and it's where every procedure happens, which is how a team gets good at something: the same work, in the same room, with the same hands.
That decision has a second effect you'll like. One well-run site costs far less to keep open than a chain of them, and low running costs are exactly where a £2,500 price comes from. The alternative, a branch in every city, is a cost that has to come out of somebody's quote, and that somebody is always the patient.
As for the distance itself: Manchester to Leeds is about an hour, whether you take a direct train or drive the M62, and there's free parking on site if you drive. You make that journey once for the day itself, because the procedure is a single day rather than a course of appointments.
What a hair transplant costs in Manchester, and why the figure doesn't move

Which brings up a phrase to test wherever you meet it. All-inclusive only means something if the figure you're given at the start is still the figure at the end, with nothing clinical added along the way. The hour that actually matters comes later
This next part settles how the whole experience feels, and the travelling has nothing to do with it.
Around weeks two to four, the transplanted hairs shed. The follicle stays exactly where it was placed while the old strand makes way for a new growth cycle, so it's expected and completely normal, and it still looks alarming at seven in the morning in your own bathroom if nobody warned you it was coming. That's the week you want a number that reaches the team who did the work themselves, and a familiar voice telling you it's all running exactly to schedule.
So the real distance question is measured in reach rather than miles. An hour of motorway keeps you within arm's length of the team for that week, and for the twelve months afterwards: new growth showing around month four, 50 to 60 per cent of the result by six months, and the full outcome at twelve. Skilled surgery is done all over the world, far from here included, and if a trip abroad is on your list then the honest thing to sort out first is who answers when you call in week three. So weigh the phone number alongside the price, because the price is settled in one afternoon and the phone number matters for a year.
Whether you need surgery at all
Worth saying plainly, because a fair number of people researching this don't need it.
Where hair is thinning all over without a bald area to point at, moving follicles around is a fix for a problem you might not have, because the ones you already own are still alive and still working. They want encouraging rather than replacing, and two treatments do exactly that: PRP, which concentrates the platelets from your own blood and returns them to your scalp, at £250 a session, and red light therapy at £500 for a course of six. If that's what your hair needs, that's what you'll be told, and finding out will have cost you nothing.
